Job Opportunity in Malaysia

■ Work visa

While staying as a student in Malaysia, you’ll be able to work up to 20 hours per week only during semester breaks, festive holidays and more than 7 days of holiday. Your work permit must be applied through your host institution and it will submit to the Immigration Department a copy of your academic progress records each 3 months. Students aren’t allowed to work in the following positions: cashier, singer, masseur, musician, guest relations officer or any activity deemed to be immoral.
When companies want to hire a non-Malaysian to work there, it is necessary to prove that Malaysians don’t want to or aren’t capable of doing the job. This doesn’t apply for strategic jobs (such as management or financial positions). You have to be at least 27 years old and the salary the company will pay you must be at least RM5,000 per month. In case you were offered a contract with RM8,000+ salary, then your work permit will be instantly accepted.

■ Employment upon graduation

There isn't any transition from student visa to work visa.

■ Work environment

The work environment is highly hierarchical and you should know to whom you are supposed to talk. Managers are supposed to be clear when giving assignments and when they aren’t, even urgent tasks remain undone. The relationships between subordinates and bosses are similar to children – parent relationship.
There are many different cultures in Malaysia, so the work environment might change slightly depending on the background of the company.

■ Outplacement rate

There isn’t information regarding the employment rate of international students. The general unemployment rate is 3.1%
